The Tindley Community

The Tindley School philosophy and curriculum are designed to get students involved in the community to impart a mutual sense of responsibility and accountability. This includes enrichment and service-learning projects that are directly connected to their academic course work. These field projects will:

  • Increase the relevancy of classroom instruction;
  • Foster a student and community view of adolescents as valuable resources; and
  • Introduce students to various professional career paths.

The Charles A. Tindley Accelerated School
Family Covenant

The Tindley School seeks to be in partnership with each one its families. Each family is required to meet with an administrator prior to the start of school to discuss the covenant. Students are asked to commit to pursuing admission at a selective college. Students are also asked to affirm that they will seek additional support when needed (even if that means an even longer school day, week, or year). Students agree to support the school uniform. Families commit to 50 hours of service over the course of the school year. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and adult siblings can be found before, during, and after the school day providing support and encouragement to Tindley students. The Family Covenant is the document that unites staff, students, and their families in the mission and vision of the school.

Family Covenant
2006 - 2007

The Charles A. Tindley Accelerated School (CTAS) is a college- preparatory school dedicated to the highest levels of student achievement and behavior. The success of all students is dependent upon the commitment of each member of the school community. The Tindley school community is comprised of the students, parents, faculty and staff. Each member of the school community makes a choice to participate and fulfill this family covenant.

Attendance

  1. I will ensure that my child comes to school every day on time to begin school at 7:45 AM.
  2. I understand that if my child is absent more than 6.5 % of his/her school year, he or she will have to repeat his or her current grade. For a typical 196-day school year, this would mean that if a student is absent with or without excuse for more than 12 days of the school year that student will fail all of his or her classes for the year and will need to repeat his or her current grade.
  3. I understand that an absence is excused if I have contacted the school and have a written detailed note regarding student illness, family emergency, or religious observance from my parent/guardian.
  4. I understand that the school day ends at 4:15 or 4:30 PM(based on grade level), but that my child may be dismissed later if he or she is required to stay for detention or required extra help.

Homework

  1. I agree to check my child’s homework daily to ensure that it is complete.

Code of Conduct

  1. I agree to promote and support the rules of behavior as outlined in the CTAS Student Handbook, and accept responsibility as a partner in my child’s learning.
  2. I understand that it is my child’s responsibility to notify me if he or she must stay after school.
  3. I understand that my child will be suspended if he or she misses a mandatory after school session.
  4. I will come to school for a meeting if my child is suspended, and I understand that my child will not be allowed to return to class until after this meeting occurs.

Promotion Policies

  1. I understand that my child needs to pass 5 core academic classes (a core class is any class that meets five times a week) each term in order to be promoted to the next grade.
  2. I understand that my child will be automatically retained if he or she fails 1 or more core academic classes.
  3. I will ensure that my child attends Saturday School if he or she is failing one or more classes as of the first progress report and any subsequent progress reports or report cards on which my child is failing for the year.
  4. I understand that my child may be required to stay for after school extra help or tutoring, and that he or she is urged to take advantage of extra help opportunities provided by teachers.

Student Dress Policy

  1. I will ensure that my child comes to school in the school uniform, according to the guidelines listed in the Student Handbook.
  2. I understand that if my child comes to school out of uniform, he or she may not be permitted to attend class, may need to wait for the appropriate dress to be brought in from home, and will receive an automatic detention to be served that day.

Family Support

  1. I agree to support my child’s academic work by communicating regularly with my child’s teachers, by scheduling appointments to talk with them as needed, and by attending all Conferences.
  2. I agree to attend Family meetings and other school-sponsored events on a regular basis.
  3. I agree to commit a minimum of 50 hours, to the school, during the school year.
